Along with the annual Vershire Fall Festival, the library will be holding its fall book sale. There will be hundreds and hundreds of great bargains available.

Upcoming October Event

The Vershire Community Library is participating in the Vermont Reads program again this year. The book chosen for this year is The Day of the Pelican by well-known Vermont author, Katherine Paterson.

This state-wide reading experience is sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council which has provided us with thirty copies of the book for sharing.

The book tells the story of a young Albanian Muslim girl in Kosovo in the 1990s. Her family is targeted by the Serbs and after a series of harrowing efforts to move to safety they land in a refugee camp in Macedonia. Eventually they are allowed to leave when they find an American sponsor. The second half of the story tells about their new life in Vermont. Based on the real experience of a Kosovar family sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church of Barre, this is a story that will sensitize us all to the plight of innocent victims of ethnic cleansing.

The book is aimed at young adults and is a quick read. We have a stack of the books at the Library. Please come by to pick one up. When you've read the book you can either bring it back to the Library or pass it along to someone else in Vershire.

We'll be planning an event in October to discuss the book and the whole experience of adjusting to life in a new country.
