There
was lots of snow, the weather was great and a throng of enthusiastic
snowshoers showed up on February 12 to be part of the 14th annual
VerShare Snowshoe-a-thon. This event is a fun day and raises
money for a great cause - the VerShare Children's Activity Fund.
The main purpose of this fund is to help make sure the
VerShare Community Camp remains free for
local children, and it also supports activities in the
Rivendell
School District and the
Wellspring School.
The Snowshoers enjoyed a delightful two mile trek through the woods
from the Vershire Town Center up to
The Mountain School. At the mid-point there was a
refreshment station where all sorts of hot and cold drinks, cookies,
homemade donuts, squares and more were available to stoke up for the
final assault up the hill to Pine Top and down to The Mountain
School. Once there, a delicious hot lunch awaited every
participant, following which everyone could enjoy the fun of a
winter carnival hosted by TMS students.
The
event once again was a tremendous success, skillfully organized by
Ethel Pike. But she is the first to let people know that
truly, it "takes a village" to make something like this happen.
So THANK YOU to the village! We're still busy
gathering statistics, but here are some preliminary numbers:
-
206 people participated as
snowshoers
-
67 Snow Angels provided pledges
totaling $40 for each child under 18 who
snowshoed
-
About 75 people supported the event
through: landowners giving permission to cross their land, medal
production, trail packing & flagging, parking and welcoming,
passing out loaner snowshoes, photography, registration,
starters, food solicitation, midpoint food donors, midpoint
helpers, van shuttles/runners, snow angel solicitations, trail
sweepers, and finish line attendants.
Many, many thanks to the Town of Vershire for use of the Town Center
and to Andy Wasserman for the mid point station.
The support of The Mountain School is vital.
Preliminarily, it looks like about $13,000 was raised. The
children thank you all!!!

Our photographers took hundreds of pictures. The best are
